Vancouver
Sail under the Lions Gate Bridge and past Stanley Park, the city glass turning gold behind us.
At Sea — The Inside Passage
A sheltered sea-lane between islands. Orcas off the bow, eagles in the spruces, and the ship's naturalist on deck with the good binoculars.
Ketchikan
Salmon capital and totem town. A floatplane over Misty Fjords, or Creek Street's boardwalk and the day's catch at the harbour.
Juneau
Helicopter to the Mendenhall icefield, dog-sled on the snowfield, or watch humpbacks bubble-net feeding in Auke Bay. The choice is the luxury.
Skagway
The White Pass & Yukon Route climbs 900 metres along the stampeders' trail of 1898 — a railway with a Broadway stage set below.
Glacier Bay National Park
Margerie Glacier calves before breakfast; Lamplugh after lunch. Sea otters ride the floes. The engines idle; the ice makes all the noise.
Sitka
Russian America: onion domes, Tlingit totems, sea otters rafting off the old quay. Alaska's most beautiful harbour, and its best halibut.
Hubbard Glacier
Six miles wide, 400 years in the making. We spend the afternoon at the face, engines off, listening to it move.
At Sea — Prince William Sound
College Fjord's cascade of named glaciers, then a quiet evening with the expedition team's farewell presentation.
Valdez
The Switzerland of Alaska: a fjord port ringed by 1,500-metre peaks and waterfalls. Kayak the sound or drive the Thompson Pass.
Seward
Disembark beneath Mount Marathon. Kenai Fjords and the Alaska Railroad wait for those who are not finished. Nobody is finished.
