Drake Passage
Albatrosses on ten-foot wings escort the ship. Lectures on ice, birds and the men who came here with wooden hulls.
Drake Passage — 60° South
The convergence: the water turns colder, the light turns silver, and the first iceberg stands on the horizon like a city.
Antarctic Sound
Iceberg Alley: tabular bergs calved from the Larsen Shelf. Adélie penguins porpoise alongside the Zodiacs.
Cuverville & Danco Islands
The peninsula's largest gentoo colony; a climb to the lookout over the Errera Channel, the sea scattered with bergs below.
Lemaire Channel & Petermann
Seven miles of sheer ice cliffs in mirror water, then ashore among Adélies and a memorial to those who wintered here.
Paradise Bay
Step onto the Antarctic mainland. Skuas patrol, glaciers grumble, and the ship's photographer finds you the frame of a lifetime.
Port Lockroy & Jougla Point
The 1944 British base, now a museum and the world's most southerly post office. Mail a card; it will arrive. Eventually.
Deception Island
Into the flooded caldera of an active volcano: black sand, ruined whalers' tanks, and the brave or foolish may take the polar plunge.
At Sea — The South Shetlands
A final day among the islands: whales in February, seals year-round, and the captain's farewell toast as we turn north.
Drake Passage
The crossing home. The library is warm, the spa is warm, the stories are getting better with each telling.
Drake Passage — Cape Horn
Rounding the Horn where weather permits. A certificate, a tradition, and the last dinner beneath the southern stars.
